My Ghost Story 2.10 (Part 1)

We at C.S.P.A. don’t believe everything that’s paranormal is malevolent or evil. We are very equipment- and research-based. We are aware some things that happen may be disturbing, but that doesn’t automatically mean there’s a demon or malevolent spirit involved.

Unfortunately, Hollywood has played a pervasive role in making everyone think that if something paranormal happens, then it must be due to a demon or diabolical. We do not ascribe to this belief. We try to maintain a rational, scientific approach. We also try to debunk and explain claims through mundane means whenever possible. This isn’t to say there may not be diabolical entities out there, but we believe they are incredibly rare if/when they exist.

We also do not discount personal experiences; however, we also know there is a certain psychology involved when people seek out or investigate the paranormal. Therefore, we must ask many pointed questions, and not all of them will have answers no matter how many times we ask those questions.

I would say if you are having situations up there [on Gold Camp Road] that are scary or threatening, then I would avoid the area. There’s no need to upset yourself unnecessarily if you don’t have to. We have not had similar experiences up there, so I can’t really speak to what may have happened in your case or how it might be explained/defined. I would caution you, however, to avoid explaining things as demonic or diabolical without sufficient research, investigation and proof.

Most of our investigations involve residential or business sites. We do not offer ghost tours, nor do we allow the general public to go along with us on investigations due to privacy/confidentiality concerns. We protect our clients’ identities and locations unless they share the information themselves or give us permission to share the location of the site.

Human psychology plays a role in paranormal experiences, and while some situations may very well be what they are, few events may qualify as evil/threatening/demonic. I would caution you or anyone from rushing to any conclusion without more detailed analysis and consideration.

When I was about 10 or so, I dreamed about this horrendous ghostly/skull-face. Back then, I lived in Roanoke, VA at 1922 Laura Road. There were a lot of horrible things that happened when I lived in that house. A lot uproar and chaos. But back to the dream: I’ll leave out the details, but it scared me so much that I never forgot it. In the dream, my brother Barry was walking past our piano (I so miss that piano and want one again!). In everyday life, he would peck on the keys as he walked by, and he did so in this dream as well. After he did that, the ghostly/skull-face manifested in the area to the left-hand side of the piano. My brother saw it (in my dream), keeled over and died right there. That’s the short story of the dream, by the way. I woke up, terrified. I’d been watching all of this happen (in my dream) from the end of the hallway.

A couple summers ago, my son Jon was in the basement, just staring into the darkness because he had insomnia. His then-girlfriend was already asleep next to him. He was lying there, hoping to fall asleep, but having no luck. All the lights were off, and it was pitch black (yeah, our basement gets inky black). All of a sudden, he saw this floating head/skull in the doorway and there were energy spikes coming from it. I’m not sure if they were balls of light or sparks…but they came over to him and hovered above his body. He was so startled he couldn’t move and couldn’t speak. He wasn’t asleep and he wasn’t dreaming. He had insomnia and couldn’t sleep, in fact.

He was telling me about it the next day and he described the same face I’d seen in my dream at ten. There were unique elements to this ghostly/skull-face and he never knew I’d had this experience as a child. It’s much too scary. I haven’t told a lot of people about it, because it was a dream and (to my knowledge) not real. I told him to stop for a moment, I pulled out a pad of paper and sketched out the face I’d seen as a child — the one he was now seemingly describing to me, without ever having heard of that dream/experience. Jon looked at my sketch, got sort of a weird look on his face and said, “Mom, why did you have to dream what I saw?!”

Needless to say, both of us were freaked out over it. I’d drawn the same skull-face (with unique details I won’t put here) in my dream that he’d seen in the basement while he had insomnia and was waiting to fall asleep. Still not sure what to make of it. Perhaps it’s a generational thing. Jon and I are alike in many ways, not the least of which is we are both career writers/editors.

We jokingly call that skull-face “Neon Leon.” When I go into the basement, I’ll often say, “How ya doin’, Neon Leon?”

Some things are stranger than fiction…ya know?
